What are Meta Tags?

Elements of HTML that are positioned within the <head> section of a web page provide metadata to be used by various search engines and social media sites. Such elements would not be visible in the content of the web page. The most common ones are snippet text and keywords (which have become obsolete) and Open Graph, as in <meta property “og:title”>. While the keyword tag no longer influences rankings, description tags, when crafted skillfully, can improve click rates from the Results pages. Meta Tags, alongside schema markups and header tags, serve to clarify content context and indexing signals. Meta Tags, if maintained correctly, enable search engines to showcase relevant data to users.

Examples of meta tags would include: <meta name=”description” content=”Learn digital marketing best practices”>; <meta property=”og:image” content=”https://example.com/og-image.jpg”>; <meta name=”robots” content=”index,follow”>.
